Here, Niebuhr presents three fundamental units: Christ, Christian as well as culture. In Niebuhr s opinion, Christ against culture is a radical response whereby Christians give their loyalty absolutely to Christ as they denounce any demand for cultural loyalty. Niebuhr presentation has Christ and culture with Christians sandwiched between them. It raises the question of how Christians interact with culture. The acceptance of Christ is the rejection of culture. According to Niebuhr, there is a clear separation between Christians and the world (47-48). Niebuhr further argues that individuals who have adopted God s ways and have accepted Christ never pledged their allegiance easily. Instead, they had to endure numerous mental as well as physical tortures, disowning their earthly affiliations in order to follow C hrist. However, the author also believes that the idea of the creation of a distinctive line between the world and Christianity is more theoretical than practical because the notion has never applied at any particular point in time.
